Why Won't My Dachshund Wear Clothes? (And How to Fix It)

Mini vs. Standard Dachshund: How to Choose the Right Size Reading Why Won't My Dachshund Wear Clothes? (And How to Fix It) 2 minutes Next How to Measure Your Dachshund for Clothes

When a dachshund freezes, flops, or wriggles out of a sweater, owners assume the dog hates clothes. Nine times out of ten, it isn't the dog — it's the fit. Here's what's usually going on.

1. It doesn't fit their body

Clothes built on a generic dog pattern ride up a dachshund's long back, bunch at the shoulders, or squeeze the deep chest. That pressure feels wrong, so the dog shuts down. A piece cut long in the back and shaped at the chest moves with them.

2. The fabric is stiff or scratchy

Dachshund skin is sensitive. A stiff, heavy, or scratchy fabric makes the whole thing feel like a cast. Soft, breathable, next-to-skin material changes everything.

3. A bad first experience

If the first piece was forced on over the head and pinched, your dog remembers. Reset with something soft and easy.

How to get a dachshund comfortable in clothes

  • Start with a soft base layer, not a bulky coat.
  • Put it on calmly, reward, then take it off after a minute. Build up.
  • Let them move and play in it — association matters.
  • Make sure it actually fits (see our size guide).

The real fix: clothes cut for the breed

Most refusal is a fit problem in disguise. Chang's pieces are drafted from scratch for the dachshund's body — long back, deep chest, short legs — by a couture-trained patternmaker, so they sit right and feel right from the first wear.
