Mini vs. Standard Dachshund: How to Choose the Right Size

Why Won't My Dachshund Wear Clothes? (And How to Fix It) Reading Mini vs. Standard Dachshund: How to Choose the Right Size 1 minute Next How to Measure Your Dachshund for Clothes

“Mini” and “standard” tell you roughly how big your dachshund is — but they're not clothing sizes. Two minis can measure differently. Always measure, then map to a size.

Mini vs. standard, roughly

  • Miniature dachshunds usually run about 5–7 kg (11–16 lb) — most land in our S–M.
  • Standard dachshunds usually run about 9–15 kg (20–32 lb) — most land in our L–XL.

These are starting points, not rules — the chest measurement decides it.

Long-haired coats add bulk

A long-haired dachshund measures bigger than a smooth one of the same frame. Measure snug against the body, then allow a little room so the coat doesn't compress.

Puppies and in-betweens

Growing puppies and dogs between sizes should size up on the chest for room — or message us with measurements and we'll pick for you.
