Are you here pondering the downsides of owning a Dachshund? Dachshunds, In your country it may be called: Doxies, Teckels、Dackels, Wiener Dogs or Weenies. Whether long haired, wire haired or miniature dachshund, these dogs have captivated many families with their unique appearance, lively, loyal, and courageous personality, as well as their beauty, intelligence, and vivacity. But what challenges might one face when raising a Dachshund?
Dachshunds Are Prone to Spinal Issues
Preventing Injuries with Proper Dachshund Clothes
Due to their body shape, Dachshunds are prone to conditions such as Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) when they jump or run vigorously. This can lead to pain, mobility issues, or even paralysis. Regular veterinary checks, careful handling, and preventing them from jumping from high places are essential preventive measures. Additionally, using well-designed Dachshund clothes can offer support and protection, helping to minimize the risk of injury. Proper Dachshund clothing can provide comfort and safety for your pet, ensuring they stay healthy and active.
Having a reliable spinal support harness can also offer extra protection for a Dachshund's back. It provides stability, alleviates spinal pressure, allowing them to walk more freely. A support harness, like a mother’s embrace, offers additional security for a Dachshund in discomfort or distress.
Stubborn Personality
These little ones have minds of their own! If they find something more interesting, like chasing small animals or digging in inappropriate places, they might choose to ignore your commands. Their bravery makes them highly independent, acting on their preferences, making them hard to train. Once a Dachshund gets used to certain behaviors, such as walking routes, sleeping spots, and eating habits, changing these habits can be very difficult.
Thus, in daily training, pet owners need to be patient and require family members to maintain consistency, including rules, commands, and rewards, to form good habits from the start.
Avoiding punishment, rewarding good behavior, especially during learning and following commands, can be effective. Treats, petting, or toys are excellent rewards.
Keeping training sessions short and engaging, as their attention spans are short, brief and fun training can yield more positive feedback and improve their learning efficiency
Love to Bark
Dachshunds, due to their hunting instincts, are highly alert and may bark more easily than some other breeds when they detect new sounds or creatures. They bark to express needs, such as hunger, desire to play, or discomfort, including separation anxiety.
Sufficient exercise, proper mental stimulation, early training, and socialization can help manage their barking behavior.
A well-fitting piece of clothing can give Dachshunds a sense of being snugly wrapped, similar to a hug, which can help reduce their anxiety, especially when going out or facing unfamiliar environments.
Identifying and addressing the reasons behind their barking with professional methods can effectively reduce barking behaviors.
Expert Diggers
Having a Dachshund digging up your garden might not sound wonderful. They might be trying to unearth a mole, hide their cherished items or food, or simply dig due to boredom, anxiety, or the need to expend energy. In summer, they enjoy digging a cool, comfortable spot.
Providing a designated area for digging is a good approach. Ensure they are not too cold or hot, ensuring they have a cool place to rest. Adequate exercise, engaging games, and family companionship can effectively alleviate digging behaviors. Wearing comfortable and soft clothing can also reduce their anxiety, serving as a positive aid.
Prone to Obesity
Their small stature and big appetites, if not carefully managed with a balanced diet and regular exercise, can quickly lead to obesity. Obesity can exacerbate back problems and lead to other health issues.
A reasonable dietary plan, weight monitoring, and regular exercise are essential to maintaining the health of a Dachshund.
Are you ready to take on the care of a Dachshund? Dachshunds are not the 'worst' breed; they are simply misunderstood. With their lively personality, steadfast loyalty, and intelligence, they can become wonderful pets for owners who understand their needs and are willing to invest time in proper training and care. Whether it’s dressing them in the latest Dachshund fashion or engaging in training classes, these spirited dogs offer a companionship as unique as their silhouette. So, before considering Dachshunds as the worst breed, think about the profound joy and companionship they bring to those who love them."

I’ve had 3. Mine grew up with Pugs. I believe made a difference. Daisy RIP is gone she my first. Mini long haired and stole my heart! So worth it. She did have a spinal setback and I held her, carried her around, had her diapers got her wheels. And miraculously one day when exercising her legs her reflexes responded! She could walk again. Before her passing rescued 2 – 9 year old brothers. Oscar had to leave us as I had to send him to heaven. The vet agreed. He’d list half his body weight and had been blind for a few years. He was 17. Mayor is still here and hanging on. He is blind too, I know I won’t have him forever. The breed is amazing and full of fun and love! Hiss 2 year old sister a Mountain Fiest Pug mix helps him along. I dread the day he leaves his sister Sophie and I but the love and emotional happiness they bring is Godsent.

I have my second dachshund, and I absolutely love this breed. I wish I could have more than one at a time.

I had a mini dachshund for 19 years. He was very sweet and loving. He was stubborn and sometimes did bad things. But that sweet face took care of all his troubles!
