How to Measure Your Dachshund for Clothes

Getting the right fit on a dachshund comes down to three measurements: back length, chest, and neck. Take those, match them to the chart below, and you'll skip the most common reason dog clothes fail on a dachshund — they were never measured for one.

The three measurements that matter

  • Back length — from the base of the neck (where a collar sits) to the base of the tail. The most important number for a long-bodied dog.
  • Chest — around the deepest, widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs.
  • Neck — around the base of the neck where a collar rests.

Measure with a soft tape while your dog is standing. Long-haired? Measure snug against the body, then allow a little room.

Dachshund size chart

Size Back length Chest Neck
S 33 cm / 13.0" 42 cm / 16.5" 32 cm / 12.6"
M 36 cm / 14.2" 48 cm / 18.9" 36 cm / 14.2"
L 40 cm / 15.7" 54 cm / 21.3" 38 cm / 15.0"
XL 43 cm / 16.9" 60 cm / 23.6" 40 cm / 15.7"

Between sizes? Choose the size 2–3 cm above your dog's actual chest — clothes should close comfortably, not compress. Rounder tummy? Size up on the chest, or message us and we'll help.

Why dachshunds need their own measurements

A dachshund's back can be twice as long as a similarly-weighted breed's, while the legs are short and the chest is deep. Sizing by weight alone — what most dog brands do — gets it wrong. Measure the body, not the scale.
